Name: Pavilion In The Pond
Client: Philip Johnson
Address: 199 Elm St, New Canaan, CT
Architect: Philip Johnson
Style: Modern / International Style
Description: A seemingly innocuous structure when taken in context to all the other buildings on the New Canaan Philip Johnson property a very simple yet elegant pavilion on a man made pond. The Pavilion On The Pond (1962) is a joy, it’s a communal space for friends to gather, Johnson meant for it to be a lounge and a place of relaxation, intimate while at the same time very open to nature. While not strictly within the confines of Modernism or the International Style it comfortably references and compliments the Glass House and other structures on the grounds. An excellent example of how Johnson’s style adapts for the time, place and function.
