778 Park Avenue is a classic example of the architect Rosario Candela’s buildings in New York City. Built in 1931 on the corner of 73rd Street and Park Avenue. The apartments have the typical easy flow, slightly formal floorpans that Candela is famous for. The exterior of the building is brick and limestone. In particular 778 Park is a prime example of what has been termed the “Cake Topper” where the top floors of the building were successively set back with balconies, nooks and crannies, in such a way that might remind the viewer of a wedding cake. Candela did not have cakes in mind for his designs, rather he took inspiration from typical luxury estate houses of the time.
