Description: Even for those who might not be from New York City, having lived there or otherwise, odds are pretty good that you’ve heard of or perhaps seen photos of the Dakota. It is quite possibly the most famous apartment building in the United States and objectively speaking maybe the most beautiful, acknowledging that taste and style varies widely.

The Dakota was built between 1880 and 1884, designed by Henry Hardenbergh for Edward Cabot Clark. Set on the North West corner of 72nd street and Central Park West. Designed in the German Renaissance style, composed primarily of brick, with sandstone trims and terracotta details. Originally built as a rental building, it remained so until 1961 when the residents of the Dakota purchased the building from the Clark family and turned it in to a cooperative apartment.

Many famous individuals have called the Dakota home, Graydon Carter, Rosemary Clooney, Roberta Flack, Judy Garland, Boris Karloff, Gilda Radner, Jason Robards, Paul Simon and John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
